What Actually Happens

The Morning

A typical Sunday at Wakehurst Rugby Park โ€” so there are no surprises on the day.

7:30 am

Gates open

Head to the main oval entrance on Waldon Road. Grab a coffee from the canteen (open early on Sunday). Find a spot on the hill โ€” it's where everyone sets up.

8:00 am

Warm-up begins

Coaches gather the kids and take it from here. You don't need to do a thing. First-timers are welcomed in โ€” our coaches have seen every level of nervous.

8:30 am

Game time

Minis play two or three short games โ€” roughly 20 minutes each. Modified rules, smaller fields. It's the best version of rugby there is to watch.

10:00 am

Canteen & community

Games wrap up. The canteen does a roaring trade in sausage sandwiches. Kids run around the hill. Parents finally stop stress-watching and start chatting.

10:30 am

Head home โ€” or stay

Minis are usually wrapped by now. If you want to keep watching, Juniors games start soon after. Some families stay all morning and wouldn't have it any other way.

When You Arrive

Who to say hello to

Head to the main oval entrance off Waldon Road. You'll see families streaming in from about 7:30am.

Look for the club volunteer with the tablet โ€” they'll register new kids and point you to the right team. They're expecting you.

Say hi to VP Minis โ€” Peter Sharpe. He's almost always on field and knows every family. No introduction needed โ€” just introduce yourself.

Set up on the hill and watch. The coaches will take it from here.

Real Questions

The things parents actually wonder

We've heard every version of nervous. Here are honest answers.

My child is really shy โ€” is that ok?
We hear this every week. Our coaches have spent years helping shy kids find their feet. Within 10 minutes, they're almost always running with the group. And if not, that's ok too โ€” there's no pressure.
What if they try it and hate it?
Then you've learned something valuable โ€” and you're out nothing. The first session is free, no commitment required. We'd rather you tried it and found it wasn't for you than never tried at all.
My daughter wants to play โ€” is that ok?
More than ok. Girls are welcome at all age groups and they play completely free at Wakehurst. Our mixed Minis teams are a great starting point. We have girls who have been playing since U6.
Do they need a mouthguard before coming?
Not for the first session. If you decide to register, a mouthguard and boots (moulded studs) are the main gear requirements. We can point you to the right gear after your first visit.
Can I stay on the field with my child?
For Blueys (ages 4โ€“5), yes โ€” parents are on field. For U6+, we ask parents to watch from the sideline so the coaches can do their thing. You'll be about 5 metres away on the hill.
What if we arrive late?
Just come in. Find the group that looks like your child's age. The coaches will fold them in โ€” it happens every week. Nobody is going to make you feel bad for being 10 minutes late.
Ready?

Just show up on Sunday

You don't need to register in advance for a first visit. Come along any Sunday morning from about 7:30am. If you want to prepare, send an email to VP Minis โ€” they'll make sure someone is there to welcome you.

Already decided? Registration is through Rugby Xplorer โ€” the national rugby registration platform.
